The Story of Mortal

The following is from an article online about Mortal's story.

There was a Douyin user who had never posted a single video, yet somehow gained over 4 million followers. It was almost unbelievable.

After learning her story, I was left speechless.

Her username was 'Mortal.' Tapping on her profile revealed just one simple but haunting line: “Requesting a resurrection scroll... never mind if none exist...”

Sadly, that humble request was never answered. But her story begins with a comment under a video.

A content creator posted a video, and Mortal commented kindly: 'Just a reminder — if you don’t sleep soon, your hair might all fall out~'

The creator misread her comment as sarcasm and replied bluntly: 'No worries, same to you.'

What the creator didn’t expect was Mortal’s next reply — cheerful but heartbreaking: 'I have cancer and already shaved my head for chemotherapy.'

She even added a cute emoji at the end. But that emoji hit the creator like a punch to the gut.

Realizing how insensitive his reply had been, the creator instantly regretted it and apologized sincerely: 'I'm so sorry, I really am. That was thoughtless. I wish you a full recovery. I'm truly sorry...'

Mortal responded with the same upbeat tone: 'There won’t be a recovery — I’ve already received the critical condition notice.' She still included a cute, silly emoji.

The creator never imagined the story would take such a tragic turn. He spent that night overwhelmed with guilt.

But to his surprise, the next day Mortal messaged him again. She comforted him, saying, 'I hope no one is harassing you,' along with a hug emoji.

Then she sent a long message. By the time he finished reading it, his eyes were filled with tears. Mortal had written:

I wanted to reply yesterday, but my body wasn’t cooperating. The pain woke me up again today. I signed the organ donation form earlier. I really can’t hold on much longer. Please take care of yourself. Let’s be friends in the next life. [hug emoji]

Her words broke me. Even someone with a heart of stone would be moved to tears. This child… her life was far too difficult.

After reading her message, the creator was in deep shock and pain. He couldn’t believe it. He replied, 'No… this can’t be real. Please tell me you’re joking. It’s not true, right?'

But Mortal replied, 'I wish it were a joke too.' After that, no matter how many messages the creator sent, he never heard from Mortal again.

That was when he realized: Mortal’s avatar was Wolffy — the cartoon character known for his line, 'I will be back.'

Maybe Mortal also wanted to say, 'I will be back.' But that chance would never come. She was gone.

It wasn’t until people began to understand the meaning behind her username, her avatar, and her signature, that they realized — Mortal was already gone.

Looking back on their conversation, it’s impossible not to be deeply moved. Without these exchanges, Mortal might have quietly vanished from this noisy, indifferent world.

They say, 'Before a diamond is discovered, it endures a long, lonely time buried in the dust.'

But perhaps more accurately: kindness and sincere goodwill are qualities of all gentle souls. When there is love in one’s heart, even a few lines exchanged online can become profoundly touching.

Some users shared additional information about Mortal in the comments, though their claims remain unverified.

One said she passed away on January 15. She was a beautiful young girl. Her phone, considered a personal belonging, was cremated with her. Her family may not even know that her account drew so much attention.

The same creator who wished to be her friend in the next life later updated his profile. It reads: 'I believe Mortal will come back.' One word in his profile says it all — Friend: Mortal. Turns out, he’s still waiting for his friend.

Her iconic line remains: 'Requesting a resurrection scroll... never mind if none exist...'

She truly wanted to live — but fate didn’t allow it.

And her username, 'mortal,' carries multiple layers of meaning.

As a noun, it means 'a human being'; as an adjective, it means 'subject to death,' 'not immortal.'

Though her story ends in tragedy, we witnessed in it incredible courage, strength, and an unrelenting love for life.

We also saw the warmth of countless strangers who responded with genuine kindness.

[Poem]

You lie beneath the earth, your bones dissolved in dust; I remain in this world, snow crowning my head.

Where does true compassion dwell? In the hearts of ordinary people, it lives on forever.
